Lambeg Drums are believed to have originated from the large drums played by William's Dutch troops on their way to the Boyne. Sometime during the late 18th century the drums where turned on "their sides" enabling both ‘heads’ or skins to be struck.

At this time the drumsticks were made of cork or wood and resembled tenor drum sticks currently used by many pipe bands. The drums themselves were constructed using numerous narrow pieces of timber, somewhat like a barrel, an early example of this can be viewed at Schomberg House.

How they became to be known as "Lambeg Drums" is not known, but one story is that around 1870 the drums were used in a parade at Lambeg and this was the first recorded time that canes were used rather than the aforementioned sticks.
